Abstract:
R. Simeon ben Zemah Duran, or Rashbatz/Tashbatz (b. Majorca, 1360 – d. Algiers, 1444), one of the preeminent figures of North-African Jewry, was an important halakhic authority, community leader, doctor, philosopher and poet. His literary oeuvre, now available both in manuscript and in printed form, includes eighty-five poems; at present, these have received minimal scholarly attention. Unlike most payytanim of the Sephardic tradition, his poetry reflects extensive use of elements from midrashic sources. This paper offers a detailed examination of the methods that Rashbatz adopted to integrate midrashic elements in his poetic works and seeks to demonstrate that these literary associations are, in effect, an essential foundational component and means for expressing thematic and ideational content. Among the techniques Rashbatz used to create the intertextual dimension in his poetry are direct citation of midrash; original content composed in midrashic form, such as use of "measure for measure", analogy (gezerah shava) and other hermeneutical rules; subtle allusions to midrashic material via insertion of a few borrowed key words or a biblical verse on which a midrash is based; and allusion via poetic tone.
