Abstract:
Focuses on Stalin's postwar persecution of representatives of Soviet Yiddish culture, culminating in the execution of the elite of Soviet Yiddish writers on 12 August 1952, after years of interrogation and torture, and a fake trial. The article commemorates the 50th anniversary of the execution of the poets Itsik Fefer, Dovid Hofshteyn, Leyb Kvitko, and Peretz Markish, and the novelist Dovid Bergelson, among others. Contrasts the hopes raised by the promises held out for Yiddish culture in the USSR and the tragic disillusionment that followed. The 1952 trial is characterized as having completed the destruction of Yiddish in Europe.
