Abstract: This article attempts to identify some functions of the repetition in Gn 38:1-11, an extremely repetitive narrative. The narrative technique allows to highlight a parallel structure based on the birth – death contrast and to divide the narrative into two symmetrical sections. The first, which insists on the life that begins and flourishes, attempts to highlight the fertility of the couple of Judah, while the second, based on the verb «to die», tells how death quickly destroys this same life. Between the two sections, Judah’s initiative to marry his eldest son Er in order to expand his family leads her into tragedy. So this interplay of repetitions, while contributing effectively to the characterization of Judah, subtly lifts the veil on what fundamentally causes death in this family, namely Judah’s covetousness.
