Abstract:
A revised version of a lecture held at a conference on "Judentum und Bildung", Hamburg, March 1990. Describes the educational policy of the school division of the Reichsvertretung der deutschen Juden during the Nazi period. The curriculum was determined by the growing realization that the future of Jewish youth lay in emigration. for instance, in elementary schools the geography classes centered on possibilities of Jewish life in various countries. Foreign languages and physical education were also emphasized. Since the Nazi regime imposed severe limits on Jewish secondary schools and their right to grant matriculation certificates, many schools prepared their students for British university examinations. Other secondary schools organized their students' emigration; at least one school was able to reestablish itself in England.
