Abstract:
Presents depositions by members of the Zionist Organization in Poland which can be found in the archives of Henry Morgenthau. He was sent to check the situation of the Jews in Poland after the pogrom in November 1918, during the Polish-Ukrainian war. Notes that a short description of the pogrom by Morgenthau is very similar to the report by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs of December 1918. According to the Zionist depositions, the pogrom was a culmination of the antisemitism which had been increasing during the First World War. In the 1918 conflict the Jews were neutral, but Poles accused them of being pro-Ukrainian. The Jews were robbed and killed only in those parts of Lvov occupied by Poles. The Polish antisemitic press instigated the pogrom by publishing articles about alleged pro-Ukrainian attitudes of the Jews. The Poles who robbed and killed were mainly Polish Army conscripts. Polish public opinion was antisemitic, and accused the Jews of lack of loyalty. The Zionist testimonies suggest that the pogrom was planned and not spontaneous. Concludes that this hypothesis cannot be proved today.
