Abstract:
The language of 19th century Romantic authors expresses antisemitic attitudes by devices such as the use of exotic and alien proper names for Jews or a peculiarly Jewish style of speech. Romantic works, such as Wagner's operas, the works of Dostoyevsky, and those of French writers, are analyzed as parables of antisemitism - rejection of the modern world of commerce, represented by the Jew, and espousal of a "fairy-tale world of mysterious harmony" from which the Jew is excluded.
