Abstract:
Examines the impact of the conflict in Palestine on the attitude toward Jews in Iraq in the 1920s-40s. The deterioration in Jewish-Muslim relations in Iraq was related mainly to the political and social changes caused by the British Mandate there (1917-32), which improved the legal and social status of the Jews. Though this enabled the Jews' integration in the government administration, it also further alienated them from the Muslims who were able to accept them only as dhimmis (of inferior status). The government, which feared American and British reactions to the persecutions, was prepared to tolerate anti-Zionism as an expression of anti-Jewish feelings in Iraq. Anti-Zionism also became the main bond between various parties fighting over a variety of social, ethnic, political, and national issues aroused by the changes in Iraq caused by the British. Thus, anti-Zionist feelings became a crucial factor in Iraqi Jewish-Muslim relations, especially during the 1940s, though the deterioration in relations was not caused by hostility over the struggle in Palestine.
