Abstract:
Disputes the conclusion, based mainly on one dubious source, that the trial and execution of Queen Elizabeth's Jewish physician, Roderigo Lopez, on the charge of attempting to poison the queen led to an outbreak of antisemitism in London. It is claimed that this event led to a revival of Marlowe's "The Jew of Malta", followed within two years by Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice". Discusses the sources used to validate this view, contending that they are dubious. Argues that there is no proof of a connection between the Lopez case and Shakespeare's play or to English attitudes towards Jews in general, and there is no evidence that any public demonstration of anti-Jewish sentiment occurred in London at the time.
