Abstract:
Presents the text of a letter written in Hebrew and Judeo-Arabic by an eyewitness to the pogroms which occurred in the city of Aden, south Yemen, on 2 December 1947. Aden's Arab leaders proclaimed a solidarity strike with the Arabs of Palestine on that day. In the ensuing riots, the Jews defended themselves. The letter states that 72 Jews were killed and 35 wounded, and among the Arabs 50 were killed and 60 wounded. Official British records claim 82 dead and 76 wounded among the Jews, and 37 dead and 87 wounded among the Arabs. Discusses reasons for the discrepancy, among them the view that the British authorities in Aden wished to present the Jews as helpless and unable to defend themselves, since the official report to Parliament stated that the Jews did not shoot at the Arabs - but this was not true.
