Abstract:
Discusses the memory of the Holocaust in Israel and analogies between Holocaust experiences and attitudes toward Arabs represented in the Israeli theater, focusing on the play "Arbeit macht Frei mi-Toitland Europa" ("Work Liberates from Deathland Europe") produced by the Akko Theatre Centre, a fringe theater group, in 1991. The actors, most of them children of Holocaust survivors, who also composed the play and directed it, used their common experiences to lead the spectators through a psychological-theatrical process of confrontation with events in the struggle of Israel for survival (especially the conduct toward the Arabs) by tragic episodes from Jewish history, such as the Holocaust.
