Abstract:
Summarizes the situation of the Conversos in Spain. When Enríquez Gómez was born at the start of the 17th century, there had been no Jews in Spain for over a century. Enríquez Gómez was of mixed, Old and New Christian origin. His father was charged with crypto-Judaism by the Inquisition. Enríquez Gómez later left Spain for France, where he wrote three dream narratives satirizing the Inquisition. Warshawsky does not interpret Enríquez Gómez's writings as a defense of Judaism nor does he view him as a crypto-Jew. Enríquez Gómez returned to Spain, where he lived clandestinely until his arrest by the Inquisition in 1661. He died in prison in 1663, a victim of the institution that he portrayed as being more interested in material goods than in any spiritual mission.
