Abstract:
Discusses guilt for the Nazi past, and its cardinal crime, the Holocaust, as a formative element of the identity of unified Germany. Günter Grass asserted that this guilt should deter Germans from unification; Martin Walser sparked a debate by arguing that the time had come to stop reproaching Germany for the Holocaust, to drop it from public discourse and ritual and leave it to the individual conscience.
