Abstract:
Examines the text of "Zhyttyepys" ("Biography") written by Yaroslav Stetsko (1912-1986), a leader of Bandera's faction of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, during his stay in Berlin in July 1941. Stetsko regards the Jews as mortal enemies of Ukraine and proposes to "bring German methods of exterminating Jewry to Ukraine"; he also opposes the assimilation of Jews. His views concerning Jews are consistent with the sentiments of the OUN-B (the faction supporting Bandera) concerning the "national" question, as expressed in various documents. Contends that "Zhyttyepys" provides a key to the OUN-B's attitude toward the Jews. Pp. 158-171 contain the original Ukrainian version of "Zhyttyepys", a German version signed by Stetsko, and an English translation. See the response by Taras Hunczak, "Problems of Historiography: History and Its Sources" [Ibid. 25, 1-2 [Spr 2001] (2004) 129-142], where he casts doubts on the authenticity of the document.
