Abstract:
German historical research on Eastern Europe did not deal with East European Jews until the beginning of the 1930s. After the rise of the Nazis, and the expulsion of Jewish scholars from this field, a sudden interest arose in the study of Eastern European Jewish immigration. Racist theories and antisemitic expressions appeared in research papers, most of which were published between 1939-42. These pseudo-scientific works served as camouflage during the period of the extermination of Eastern European Jewry, when they proposed immigration restrictions and expulsions. Three researchers are mentioned in particular: Peter-Heinz Seraphim, an economist; Reinhart Maurach, a jurist; and the historian Josef Sommerfeldt.
Note:
Especially on the antisemitic historians P.H. Seraphim, J. Sommerfeldt and R. Maurach.
