Abstract:
Following Christoph Dieckman's historiographical views and based on a report written in December 1941 by Karl Jäger, commander of Einsatzkommando 3, discusses the murder of the Jews of Lithuania as the starting point of a "new era of human criminality". Argues that the organization of the murder of the Jews by Jäger's commando highlights the fact that only the general guidelines were determined by the Nazi leaders, while their practical implementation was left to the occupying forces. Jäger, on his own initiative, developed an organizational model, which enabled the mass killing of 13,100 Lithuanian Jews by December 1941. Lithuania thus served as a proving ground for the murder, from 1942 on, of Jews in German concentration camps. In parallel with the mass killings, ghettos were established in Lithuania. After the liquidation of the Vilna ghetto at the end of 1943, ca. 19,000 Jews remained in Lithuania. In July 1944, the last of them were deported to Poland and Germany. Of the total Jewish population of more than 200,000, only ca. 9,500 survived.
