Abstract:
Scholars have offered four different suggestions as to who might have been Abarbanel’s teacher (or teachers), one of them was that the student of his older contemporary R. Joseph Hayyun until he was forced to flee Portugal at age forty-six. The goal of this article is to argue that despite the historical and geographical facts bolstering this theory, it too, like the earlier suggestions, is apparently made out of whole cloth. Moreover, I intend to argue that Abarbanel was not familiar with Hayyun’s Bible commentaries (except perhaps for two of them), even though they were widely available at the time.
