Abstract:
Between 1596 (the Union of Brest) and 1648, Ukrainian and Belorussian writers, advocating the rights of the Orthodox Church in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, referred to the fact, perceived by them as unbearable, that Jews and Muslims enjoyed greater privileges than Orthodox Christians. They did not question the right of Jews to have religious services (synagogues, rabbis, etc.), but argued that Christians should be accorded more rights than Jews and Muslims. The same motif appeared in Cossacks' complaints to Poles in the years prior to the 1648 uprising. Notes that Orthodox writers showed greater tolerance toward Jews than did the Catholics, but less than did the Protestants.
