Abstract:
Examines Abraham Joshua Heschel’s contribution to Christian-Jewish understanding, culminating in his influence on the "Nostra Aetate" declaration. Heschel emphasized the need for mutual respect and demanded that the Church abandon the mission to the Jews and the teaching of contempt. During the preliminary stages of Vatican Council II, Heschel helped the American Jewish Committee to prepare three memoranda for Cardinal Bea. He made a special trip to see Pope Paul VI in Rome to prevent inclusion of a clause expressing the hope that all the Jews would convert, and to emphasize the need to include a strong condemnation of antisemitism. Heschel’s books were read by Cardinal Bea and Pope Paul VI, and influenced other theologians, especially Reinhold Niebuhr.
