Abstract:
States that the motif of the Jew as the personification of evil can be found in writings from antiquity to modern times. Discusses the accusation of deicide in the New Testament, and the contribution of works by the Church Fathers (e.g. Hippolytus, Chrysostom, Papias of Hierapolis) to the demonization of the Jew. Relates to the figure of Dracula in 19th-21st century fiction and drama as an example of the literary use of old antisemic stereotypes, and proof of the continuity and persistence of old-time prejudices in modern times.
