Abstract:
Examines the Nazi-Jewish negotiations in 1944 on the issue to stop deportations from Hungary (e.g. the Brand-Gyorgy mission, and the Eichmann-Kasztner negotiations of May-June 1944) or even to radically change Nazi policy toward the Jews (as was negotiated between Saly Mayer and Kurt Becher in August-September 1944). Argues that it was Himmler who initiated these negotiations. Realizing that Germany had lost the war, he sought a separate peace with the Allies and wanted to use Jewish leaders in Hungary as his intermediaries. Himmler also wanted to whitewash his own image in the Allies' eyes. Eichmann reluctantly cooperated with this plan; Hitler was openly against any halts in the Final Solution.
