Abstract:
The German defeat in World War I was followed by a flowering of literature celebrating the German war effort and the Freikorps experience of the postwar period. The powerlessness felt by German soldiers after the war caused resentment of the powers of some women and Jews. In German novels, this resentment resulted in images of subversive females and conspiratorial Jews, the enemies of German soldiers. However, Jews were seen as the greater threat, because they also posed a threat to German women. Discusses, inter alia, works by Hans Zöberlein and Artur Dinter, who advocated forced separation of Jews and German women in order to protect the Germans against Jewish infiltration.
