Abstract:
Describes the participation of Victor Basch in Dreyfus's defense, especially at the Rennes trial in 1899. An assimilated Jew of Hungarian origin, Basch assumed his Jewish identity at the time of the Affair and stood up for democracy against nationalism and reaction as one of the founders of the French League of Human Rights. He was attacked and discriminated against as a "foreign Jew" by the antisemitic press, right-wing demonstrators, and the pro-military conservative public opinion.
