Abstract:
Examines the Christian tradition (also adopted by modern scholars) crediting Constantine with the prohibition on Jews to enter Jerusalem, allegedly issued in 335, coinciding with his dedication of the Holy Sepulchre. Claims that since the evidence from Constantine's period suggests that the Emperor's main orientation in Jerusalem was anti-pagan rather than anti-Jewish, the anti-Jewish prohibition could have been issued by the Governor of Palestine, probably influenced by local church leaders eager to exploit anti-pagan feelings as a way to further humiliate the Jews.
