Abstract:
Examines trends in the study and teaching of the Holocaust in Israel as reflected in thirteen textbooks for high school students published between 1954-83. The textbooks printed between 1954-75 characterized the reactions of the majority of the victims as negative, shameful, and passive ("as sheep led to the slaughter") and compared them with the highly-regarded conduct of the ghetto fighters, which was more becoming in the eyes of the victorious generation of Israel's War of Independence. The experiences of the Eichmann trial in 1961-62 and of the Yom Kippur War in 1973 brought on changes in the condemnatory attitude found in the earlier textbooks. The value-charged approach was replaced by an introspective presentation of daily strategies of resistance ("the sanctification of life") as revealed by intensified research into the Holocaust reality.
