Abstract:
States that it is imperative to establish criteria for the evaluation of Holocaust literature because there has been a marked increase in exploitation and distortion of the subject in recent years. Suggests criteria centered on three issues: historical accuracy, literary quality, and "intellectual integrity." Discusses works by Edward Lewis Wallant, Philip Roth, William Styron, Saul Bellow, and Aharon Appelfeld in terms of these criteria (criticizing the first three, and praising Bellow and Appelfeld).
