Abstract:
When the Nazis decided on the expulsion of the Jews from Germany, they did not take into consideration the refusal of other countries to admit them. This problem worsened after the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, when the Gestapo was willing to release interned Jews only for the purpose of emigration, encouraging Jewish organizations to falsify passports and other documents. In Austria many Jews were deported by the Gestapo over the Swiss, Czech, or Yugoslav borders. At the Evian Conference (July 1938), the participating countries, with the exception of the Dominican Republic, had refused to accept Jewish emigrants, especially as they were forced to leave their property behind.
