Abstract:
The 14th-century book "The Travels of Sir John Mandeville" (probably a pseudonym of the author) was extremely popular in the late medieval and early modern periods and has been highly influential since, surviving in ca. 130 printed editions in at least ten European languages. It is known for its sympathetic and tolerant treatment of "others", including Greek Orthodox, Syrian and Nestorian Christians, Jacobites, Muslims, Tibetan Buddhists, Hindus, and Mongols, Scholars have considered Mandeville's tolerant attitude toward non-Western European Christian "others" remarkable for his time. What they have generally ignored is his hateful depiction of the Jews, whom he accused of a worldwide cabal to destroy Christendom and to fill the world with evil. The theme underlying "Travels" is Mandeville's advocacy of a Christian crusade to recapture the Holy Land and deny Jews any connection with it.
