Abstract:
Examines the relationship to Judaism, Christianity, and the Shoah of two French Jewish writers drawn to Roman Catholic mysticism and accused of antisemitism. Confirming Weil's antisemitism, considers it in its context, her idiosyncratic connection to Christianity and the prewar period in which it developed. Traces Maritain's ideological and spiritual path in light of her autobiography, a prose text, and a poem, all written during World War II. Concludes that Maritain's texts, although containing certain contradictions, exude philosemitism and compassion with the fate of the Jews and cannot be compared with the quasi-Christian antisemitic writings of Weil.
