Abstract:
The opera "La Juive" (music by Jacques-Fromental Halévy, libretto by Eugène Scribe) was produced in Paris in 1835. It was one in a series of operas which dealt with religious and racial bigotry at the time. The theme of "La Juive" is "illicit" love between the Jewish girl Rachel and a Christian, who are persecuted by both Jews and Christians; in the end, Rachel is executed by the Christian authorities. In terms of historical background, theological implications, and human tragedy, the scenario of "La Juive" provides a depth and richness of semiotic discourse, a sustained exploration of a complex and many-faceted subject.
