Abstract:
Describes the life of Joseph Samuel Bloch - rabbi, journalist, and politician, focusing on his controversy with August Rohling over the latter's falsifications of the Talmud in attempts to prove the ritual murder allegation. Bloch denied Rohling's accusations in the press. Rohling sued him for defamation but lost his case. Bloch continued to fight Austrian antisemitism as a member of parliament, in his newspaper "Dr. Blochs Österreichische Wochenschrift", and in the Österreichisch-Israelitische Union which he founded. In 1893 he successfully sued Josef Deckert, an antisemitic pastor who published a pamphlet on the blood libel and incited against Jews in the "Vaterland" newspaper.
