Abstract:
The Joseph story is a witness to the relationship between Joseph’s apparent experiences and God’s hidden providence. In order to understand providence correctly, a focused reading is required. The lens for this is provided by the figure of Joseph in the final section of the novella (Gen 50:15–26). There, Joseph offers a providential interpretation of the events of the previous chapters. The close connections between chapters 50 and 37, the motif of God’s visitation (50:24 f.), and the bringing up of Joseph’s bones (50:25) function as a narrative invitation to reread the preceding chapters and recognise the hidden providence of God in the novella.
