Kurzfassung:
Analyzes Sobol's approach to the memory of the Holocaust and its meaning, as well as to conflicts confronting Israel and its people nowadays, as reflected in the presentation of the Holocaust and of related moral dilemmas in his "Ghetto" trilogy and in the film script "J" (based on the trilogy) written during 1983-88, which deal with events in the ghetto of Vilna during 1942-43. Examines dramaturgical devices employed by the Israeli playwright. States that Sobol regards Holocaust experiences of survival, which imply, according to him, deception of the Nazis and collaboration with them, as experiences influencing individual and collective life in Israel today. The mechanisms of remembrance and the reconstruction of the past reflect on the presentation of the present and its moral and ideological conflicts.
