Abstract:
Describes the politicization of music in Germany in the interwar period, noting that an aesthetic paradigm shift took place compared to the 19th century. Whereas Wagner’s rejection of Jewishness in music had been connected to musical progress, the rejection of Jewish music in the 1920s was linked to musical conservatism. Hans Pfitzner was the foremost representative of this view, but he was criticized by Karl Blessinger, who argued that the problem was not modern music per se but the fact that it was dominated by Jews and foreigners. From 1925 on, racist views seeped increasingly into the discourse, and from 1933 on, antisemitism moved into the area of musical politics, resulting in anti-Jewish measures.
