Abstract:
Examines the harassment campaign against the family of the lawyer Samuel Untermyer prior to and after U.S. entry into World War I. Like many prominent American Jews of German origin, Untermyer sympathized with Germany and its cause in the war. His successful confrontations with some leading antisemites, like John Pierpont Morgan Sr., turned numerous powerful men of the WASP elite into his enemies. During the U.S. involvement in the war, Untermyer held patriotic attitudes, and his son Alvin was enlisted in the army. Despite this, in 1917 Samuel and Alvin Untermyer, as well as some other members of their extended family, were investigated by the Military Investigation Division. The campaign against the Untermyers continued even after the war. Their case shows that the transition from investigating pro-German aliens in wartime USA to investigating left-wing radicals after the war had an intermediary stage: the investigation of "pro-German" Jews, embodying the "Jewish threat".
