Abstract:
Describes antisemitic opinions of leading French socialists in the 19th century. The socialists who considered capitalism as a parasitic non-productive system were divided into two groups: one condemned the Jews for their religion (e.g. Fourier, Toussenel, Leroux); the other condemned them for their race (e.g. Proudhon, Tridon). Fourier saw the emancipation of the Jews as the biggest mistake of the French Revolution. Toussenel and Leroux both published antisemitic books. Proudhon suggested that Jews should either be deported or exterminated. Tridon introduced racial antisemitism into French socialism. In the 1880s nearly all French socialist schools had antisemitic undertones, which were often reflected in the "Revue Socialiste". After the publication of an article by Gustave Rouanet in 1890, and after the Dreyfus Affair, many socialists abandoned antisemitism due to its anti-republican and reactionary character.
