Abstract:
Longstanding resentment against the Jews in Worms came to a head in 1614-15, when citizens, rebelling against the Jews' protectors in the city council, stormed the ghetto, confiscated moneylenders' records, destroyed the synagogue, and drove the Jews out of town. The Emperor restored order and exiled the three instigators of the rebellion; in 1616 the Jews returned. Details the arguments by which the exiled leaders justified the rebellion: citizens' rights - the failure of the authorities to consult the citizens when granting privileges to the Jews; Jewish crimes, especially usury; and God's curse on the Jews who shed Christian blood.
