Abstract:
Discusses Holocaust teaching in the ultra-Orthodox Beit Yaakov schools in Israel, based on the program of a Beit Yaakov seminary in Jerusalem where Holocaust studies were first offered in 1996. States that the program stresses the meaning of the Holocaust for the Jews (rather than the events); identification with Orthodox victims who upheld their faith, and the obligation of Jews to continue in their path and maintain their values; rabbinic teachings before, during, and after the Holocaust, which contend that it was only one occurrence in the long history of Jewish suffering and therefore does not pose any special problems of faith; and using the Holocaust to strengthen Jewish identity.
