Abstract:
The French writer Romain Gary (who also wrote under the pseudonym Emile Ajar) was born a Jew but did not significantly identify with Jewishness before the Holocaust. After serving with the Free French Forces during the war, his confrontation with the reality of the Holocaust led him to express himself about Jews, Jewish nature and destiny, and his own Jewishness. He committed suicide in 1980. His contribution to the literature of the Holocaust is both significant and profoundly moving.
