Abstract:
The Kishinev pogrom of 1903 enhanced the tendency of the Bund to engage in multilingual propaganda, including issuing appeals aimed at non-Jewish audiences. Compares Bund appeals issued in 1903-04, after the pogroms in Kishinev, Homel, and Smela, in various languages (Yiddish, Russian, Polish, English, and German) and addressed to various target groups. For instance, a Yiddish version focuses on the necessity for Jewish self-defense, while a Polish version calls for workers' solidarity. In Russia, the Kishinev pogrom shifted the center of Bundist activity from Lithuania and Poland to the south; outside Russia, it motivated the Bund to turn to a mass audience for solidarity.
