Abstract:
This article intends to study the Marian reading that Justus of Urgell, a minor Spanish author of the early sixth century, makes of two verses, in particular, of the Song of Songs (4:12 and 6:2). Suggested for the first time in the De institutione virginis of Ambrose of Milan, the identification of the Beloved with the Virgin Mary remains marginal in the patristic writings of the first centuries. It will thus be a question of cautiously analysing the possible sources of Justus of Urgell for these two verses: if the exegesis of Song 4:12 is very certainly only a repeat of the interpretation already given by Jerome of Stridon in the Adversus Iovinianum (I, 31), in which one finds Ambrosian ideas, the exegesis of Song 6:2 seems, in this instance, the proof of the originality of Justus of Urgell since no other author, whose writings we possess, had proposed a Marian reading before him.
