Abstract:
A lecture given at an international symposium on "Juden in der Weimarer Republik" (Arnoldshain, 1984). Describes Lessing's life until his assassination in 1933 and his experiences with antisemitism, which even affected his friendship with the metaphysicist Ludwig Klages, who called him a "disgusting and importunate Jew". Lessing, a controversial philosopher, was attacked because of his Jewish origins, yet he himself adopted antisemitic stereotypes, claiming (in his book "Der jüdische Selbsthass", 1930) that self-hatred is typical of the Jewish people.
