Abstract:
Examines the role of historiography in fabrication and perpetuation of the accusation of Jewish ritual murder, focusing on the first such charge which was made in 1150 by Thomas of Monmouth, five years after the alleged death of the child William of Norwich. Thomas invented the accusation that Jews crucified the boy; the story spread rapidly and was adopted by medieval chroniclers. Langmuir faults Jewish historians for failing to deny it completely, thus allowing modern non-Jewish writers to present theories giving Jews some responsibility for the crime.
