Abstract:
In medieval Spain, sexual relations between a Christian and a Jew were punishable by penalties, and both communities favored such measures. This is reflected in later Spanish literature by depictions of stereotypes such as the beautiful Jewess, an object of pleasure, who agrees to convert. In his play "El Brasil restituido", Lope de Vega describes how a Jewish woman in Brazil is repudiated by her Christian lover. Lope de Vega also accuses the Jews of responsibility for the fall of Bahia (a province in Brazil) to the Dutch, and portrays Conversos as noblemen but without the nobleman's honor.
