Abstract:
Examines the description and interpretation of the Holocaust found in surviving manuscripts and in the postwar prose of Yeshayahu Spiegel (1904-1990) - writer, poet, and critic of Yiddish literature. Spiegel remained in the Łódź ghetto throughout its existence (May 1940-August 1944) and was employed by the Judenrat in its various departments. In August 1944 he was deported to Auschwitz and spent the rest of the war in various labor camps. He emigrated to Israel in 1950. The manuscripts describe everyday life and interpersonal relations in the ghetto, but without identifying any known personalities. Comparison of the manuscripts with the postwar published works based on the manuscripts reveal differences in the descriptions of the ghetto reality as well as in the interpretation of the Holocaust. The many revisions reflect changes in the author's views as a result of his postwar experiences as a survivor.
