Abstract:
Historians involved in press research have always thought that in the 17th century historical events were reported impartially. When the Deutsche Presseforschung (German Press Research) in Bremen recently received a collection of German papers from the 17th century, it became evident that the press was marked by lack of objectivity. During the years 1648-49, in reports on the Cossack rebellions, the mass massacre of Jews in Nemirov was hardly mentioned, and a reporter from Hamburg wrote that the harm done was not terrible because only Jews were killed. The German reader was also informed about the Cossack demand to expel the Jews.
