Abstract:
Discusses the photographic records of the persecution of the Jews in Germany (1933-39) and the Holocaust (1939-45) stressing the importance of photographs as historical evidence. Many of these records were made by the Nazis for their own purposes, often for antisemitic propaganda. Other photographs were taken by news agencies or private individuals. Pt. I includes photographs of the anti-Jewish boycott, Dachau concentration camp, the expulsion of the Polish Jews, and "Kristallnacht." Pt. II includes material from World War II and the Holocaust, photographed by official propaganda photographers, German municipal authorities (who recorded deportation of local Jews), and amateurs. Reproduces a selection of photographs from transit camps in France, the expulsion of Jews from Germany (some with antisemitic captions), and Theresienstadt.
Note:
On photographs from the Holocaust period.
