Abstract:
Describes the life and activities of one of the major founders of religious Zionism, Rabbi Yehudah Alkalai (1798-1878), who served as the rabbi in Zemun (or Semlin, since 1934 part of the municipality of Belgrade). Inter alia, recounts persecutions of the Jews of Serbia during the 19th century, including acts of murder, kidnapping, blood libels, and pillage and looting of property - particularly in Belgrade and Šabac. Mentions in particular the "golden period" under the rule of Prince Miloš Obrenović I (1817-39 and 1859-60), when the Jews were accorded full equal rights. Virulent antisemitism developed after he was deposed in 1839 and after his death in 1860.
