Abstract:
States that Joseph Campbell (1904-1987), American scholar of myths, was hostile to both Jews and Judaism. Although he disliked all Western religions, he was particularly critical of Judaism (e.g. charging it with extreme ethnocentrism or as being the most patriarchal and anti-mystical of all Western religions). Many of his characterizations of Judaism are standard antisemitic accusations (e.g. chauvinistic, legalistic). According to Campbell, Judaism interprets the Bible literally, historically, and anti-mystically, etc., whereas it should rather be interpreted symbolically, psychologically, comparatively, matriarchally, and mystically. Argues that the roots for Campbell's antisemitism do not lie in his scholarly work, but in his anti-Jewish Catholic upbringing.
