Abstract:
Relates the case of a Moroccan Jew who claimed in 1979 that he had found the Gate to Paradise in the backyard of his house in Bet She'an, Israel. He stated that he knew this because the Prophet Elijah had visited him in his dreams and told him. Elijah then became the patron saint of the site. The man set up a shrine in his backyard which drew pilgrims to the spot for many years. It came to an end when the man sold his house and moved to another town in the early 2000s. Examines the nature of the evolution of such made-up holy sites, and the motives of the pilgrims who believe in them.
