Abstract:
Appelfeld's partly autobiographical works present the unresolvable tension between what seemed and what was in probing the minds of victims of the Holocaust. In his writing there is a transition from depicting traumatized Jewish survivors in Israel cut off in one manner or another from their past to (in the 1980s) exploring the intellectual life of assimilating European Jews prior to the Holocaust and in post-Holocaust Europe and (in the 1990s) incorporating the actual events of the Holocaust directly into his fiction.
